Mayor Belmonte Vouches for QC’s Drainage Master Plan as Araneta Flooding Recedes Faster

Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte highlighted the positive impact of the city’s Drainage Master Plan in addressing recurring flood issues along G. Araneta Avenue. Actual observations recorded on August 8, 9, and 10 showed that rising floodwaters now typically recede within about two hours after heavy rain subsides.

Acknowledging the avenue’s history during inclement weather, the mayor noted, “Sa mga nakalipas na taon, madalas bahain ang G. Araneta Avenue kapag may bagyo o sunod-sunod na pag-ulan (In past years, G. Araneta Avenue was frequently flooded during typhoons or continuous rain).” She emphasized that while heavy downpours still cause temporary flooding, the water accumulation is no longer continuous.

The local executive pointed out that the faster drainage time is a direct result of strategic infrastructure interventions. She explained, “Ito ang bunga ng Drainage Master Plan ng lungsod, na layong mapabuti ang daloy ng tubig-baha at hindi maperwisyo ang mga residente (This is the result of the city’s Drainage Master Plan, which aims to improve the flow of floodwater and avoid inconveniencing residents).”

Key initiatives aligned with the master plan include drainage expansion projects executed in partnership with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). Additionally, the city government installed local detention basins around the Araneta area to manage floodwater runoff.
